Current eQ mentor Stephanie Difford, Head of Chemistry at St. Olaves Grammar School, shared her insight into mentoring during a recent Q&A session with eQ.
In this video Stephanie discusses the impact of timetabling in ensuring a trainee can work alongside different colleagues within the school’s science department. Stephanie also reflects on the subject-specific focus of eQ curriculum content, half-termly reports and the value of having a routine and sequence for reflection through the training year.

Stephanie discusses the positive impact that mentoring has had for her and her trainee, while observing some of the key challenges this has presented so far.
Reflecting on the importance of collaboration between the trainee and colleagues within their department, Stephanie notes:
“The subject-specific training days mean that the content your trainee brings back into the school can be really helpful for existing teachers.”

Stephanie reflects on her mentoring experience so far, sharing her advice for anyone considering becoming a teacher training mentor:
“Try and work out a point in your timetable every week, where you can block out time to meet with your trainee; ensure that your school’s Senior Leadership Team have given you set time for that purpose. Management within a school need to be aware that if they want the school to put the time into having trainees, then they need to have make time available. “
