Reflecting on a Transformative Year of Primary Teacher Training

At our final in-person training day of the year in London, Karen from Thomson House School reflected on her experience of the Equalitas Primary Teacher Training Programme. From developing a deeper understanding of effective teaching to building confidence across the primary curriculum, Karen shared how specialist training and a supportive community of fellow trainees helped shape her journey.

From Experience to Understanding Teaching

Before joining the Primary Teacher Training Programme, Karen was already leading classes at Thomson House as a Teaching Assistant. Through the programme, she was able to deepen her understanding of key curriculum domains, particularly in behaviour management, adaptive teaching, and how pupils learn.

This enabled her to connect practical experience with evidence-informed theory, strengthening her ability to create purposeful learning environments, manage behaviour effectively, and make informed pedagogical decisions that support pupil progress.

Building Confidence Across the Curriculum

Many trainees at the start of the primary programme feel daunted by the range of subjects to develop a deep knowledge of and teach. Karen explains how Equalitas’ subject-specific training days enabled her build to build knowledge and confidence in areas that were new to her, providing practical strategies she could apply directly in the classroom.

Learning from Experts and Peers

A key part of Karen’s experience was learning alongside fellow trainees while benefiting from the expertise of Equalitas Primary Phase Leaders, Shanti Chahal (English), Ashleigh Bruce (Phonics), Vicki Cann (Maths) and Clare Bertram (Computing).

Through subject-specific training and collaboration with peers, Karen became part of a community of educators committed to improving their practice and supporting one another’s development.

Looking Ahead

As Karen prepares for the next stage of her teaching career at Thomson House School, she reflects on a year of growth, learning and transformation that has strengthened both her confidence and her understanding of effective teaching.
