Systematic Synthetic Phonics: building confidence in early reading

Systematic Synthetic Phonics training is purposefully sequenced within the Equalitas curriculum to develop confidence, alongside strong substantive and disciplinary knowledge.

Each session develops and applies core phonics principles, moving from foundational subject knowledge and teaching sequences into decodable texts, spelling, early writing and support for older early readers.

This ensures trainees do not experience phonics as isolated theory, but as a coherent practice grounded in the classroom. Observation of expert practice, alongside deconstruction, peer rehearsal and focused reflection, builds both knowledge and confidence.

Trainee teachers develop a secure understanding of phonics and learn how to adapt their teaching for all learners, supporting early reading. They leave not only more knowledgeable, but ready to teach phonics with clarity and confidence.

This approach was evident in a recent Primary training day, where trainees worked together to apply their learning in practice.

One trainee reflected:

“Clearer modelling as I am more confident with both phonemes and graphemes. This has supported pupil progress.”

Another highlighted how the training is informing their decisions around texts and progression:

“The training has improved my confidence in spotting common exception words in texts and matching GPCs to the correct phonics level. This is helping me choose the right decodable books and support pupils more accurately, which is helping them make better progress in reading.”

For many, the shift was also about confidence and clarity in teaching:

“The phonics training days and learning tasks have strengthened my knowledge of precise pronunciation, clear modelling, and how to teach phonics in small, sequenced steps. They have also increased my confidence in correcting misconceptions straight away and in using repetition.”
